Gathering in vain.

Chapter 1: When love happens.

It was evening and the moon was full. A still windless night that seemed to intensify the sounds of the forest insects in the bushes around the compound. I stood up from the reclining wooden chair under the pear tree where I had sat down to enjoy the evening breeze and savour the residues of the properly prepared melon soup that I could still taste in my mouth.

I stood for a while and swayed from side to side, loving every bit of how hefty and agile I felt. I tapped my protruding stomach and belched contentedly. I was happy. Everything seemed to be going so well for me. It was already a week since I spoke to Mbana, my loving and caring girlfriend, whom I had been courting for about a year and whom I decided I was going to marry. I know it was a long time to have stayed away from her but I had my reasons. I figured that our next meeting would be exciting, to say the least, because I had done so much in one week and I couldn't wait to tell her and see her usual excited face, hear her musical voice, and listen to the usual encouragement from her. I couldn't wait to smell her - a nice smell which I fought in futility not to get used to and which I could even smell when not with her. Oh! A smell that I could perceive right there and then where I stood.

I couldn't wait to see her eyes, my weakness, and most importantly, I couldn't wait to see her, dressed in those two-piece clothes - one covering over her breasts and the other covering decently over her waist but leaving a good portion of her attractive thighs and sensual legs to view. "Awuradze Nyankopon!" I sighed, using the Ghanaian words I picked up from work. I could not wait to hold her in my arms. I was happy! So very happy.

I folded the chair and made my way to my hut. I arranged the room and kept the gongs and other local musical instruments that were assigned to me by my dance group before brushing some particles of sand from my bamboo bed.
