Reports say Anthony Joshua has decided to retire from boxing in the wake of last week's tragic car crash in Nigeria.

Two of his close friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, tragically lost their lives when the Lexus they were travelling in collided with a stationary lorry.

Joshua himself suffered minor injuries, with the 36-year-old spending the New Year in hospital before later being discharged. They had been on their way to visit his family in the country before the tragedy struck.

Prior to the incident, the Briton had beaten Jake Paul in Miami, Florida. There had also been rumours of a seismic, all-British showdown with Tyson Fury that would take place in 2026.

A family insider was quoted as saying: “The major thing there is that he has retired from boxing.

"That is one thing that makes us glad because each time he’s fighting in the ring, we are always carried away emotionally.

“Each time he’s knocked down, it is just like the heart is coming out of our chest.

"All these emotional feelings whenever he’s fighting, it’s too much trauma for us, also.

"Now that he has said that he’s leaving while the ovation is highest, we are happy.”

Wow, that's so tragic. Anthony Joshua is such an incredible man and fighter, but losing those two friends must be devastating. Taking some time out feels natural after such a tough week. Wishing him strength moving forward. His legacy will live on through his achievements and inspiration he gave to us all.

Damn, that’s so sad. Losing those two friends in a car crash is just gut-wrenching. Anthony Joshua still gotMinorInjuries but is discharged now. Hopefully, he can focus on retirement instead of the upcoming fight with Fury. His family sounds relieved, which is touching.

Wow, that’s so sad. Anthony Joshua must be going through such a tough time after losing two close friends in that tragic car crash. We’re all praying for him and his family during this incredibly difficult time. Though he has to make the tough decision to retire, at least he still has his health and the upcoming fight with Tyson Fury ahead of him. Wishing him strength.

Wow, Anthony Joshua has got to have a tough time now after that crash. The tragedy of his friends' loss adds so much emotional weight to this decision. It’s understandable he’d want peace while the ovation was still high. Boxing is more than just a sport for him—he’s carrying such deep roots in Nigeria and beyond. Praying for his recovery and best wishes moving forward.
