The program was established in 1973 to promote national unity and foster ties between people from different parts of Nigeria. It requires all Nigerian graduates under 30 to spend one year in a state different from their state of origin. During this time, they engage in community development, social and infrastructural projects, and participate in skill acquisition and entrepreneurship training.
