Afterthought

Carve me a face and I'll draw up a story.
In the times of times,
When age was just a myth,
And the time of man an afterthought,
Bud a tender branch,
Whose way was perfect,
A strange sight indeed.
In whispers of hushed tones they spoke,
So as not to upset the balance.
The branch, whose back bore numerous blows,
Grew, with shelter for all and sundry.
A law to himself he was,
Till the hewers came to inquire for a price,
Roped in despair, haggling hope,
Was told the fare was puffed up.
In a bid to save himself,
Sold his life's essence,
To oversight.
