when we were kids
when we were kids,
to the heat we never bend,
for -the sun was our friend,
possessed by childish trend
and childhood strength.
.
those days were gone, yet
the plays were fun, when kids
were always on the run in
nagging sun; in sagging shorts,
rolling tyres and hurling stones.
.
mischievous ones, as myself,
fond pelting lizards with stones,
and innocent birds, hopping on
the wall, and darting clubs at
ripened cherries and mangoes.
.
when we were kids, only for
food we longed, and for play.
flying kites in the sky and paper
plane, took homework appetites
and domestic chores.
.
snail-cone 'okoto' was my
favourite game; and 'tokini, tokeji...'
at sunset, boys and girls gather
for rope jump, 'ten-ten' and 'lèké -leke-bami-leke...'
.
at sunset, my skins, hands, feet
were browny like dyed in calabash
of pure 'osun', but mama must
bathe and daub me talc, as the moon
and stars gazed on at nightly hours.
