Hello Casablanca,
I'm so excited today because I stopped by your city to find my away and one of your monumental structures guided me safely.
Might be wondering which of them... Well, I speak of one modern landmark that typifies moroccoan architecture - Hassan II Mosque. The name of the mosque shows that King Hassan II funded the project.
The mosque was designed by Michel Pinseau, a French architect and it took about six years to build and was completed in 1993. Records have it that about 6000 master craftspeople were assembled to work on the mosque, delicately carving intricate patterns and designs in fragrant cedar wood from the Middle Atlas and pink granite from Agadir.
The gates were made from brass and titanium, and the ablution fountains in the basement, which are shaped like huge lotus flowers, were carved from local marble.
I've heard that it is the second largest functioning mosque in Africa and is the 14th largest in the world. It can accommodate 105,000 worshippers.
I also heard that it was built at enormous expense and set at a location where oceans waves blew through. It is believed that the location near the ocean was chosen because a verse in the Qura'an stated that Allah's throne was built upon the water.
Interestingly, the Hassan II Mosque is open to non-Muslims so that a tour guide can walk you through the entire structure.
As side attraction, there’s also a small museum showcasing the craftwork involved in making the mosque the wonder to our world it truly is.
To have a feel and thrill of this amazing wonder, visitors must be decently dressed with parts of your body covered according to the Islamic custom.
