Hello Dakar

Dakar is famous for many landmarks within its walls and Africa at large. The Mosque of Divinity, Faidherbe Bridge, Grand mosque of Dakar, Cathedral of our Lady Victories, House of Slaves and Great Mosque of Touba, just to mention a few.

The list above stand aloof in Dakar, however one Monument that stands taller than all of them is the Le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine (African Renaissance Monument).

Le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine, when translated in English refers to the African Renaissance Monument is a colossal bronze statue reaching up an incredible 164 feet in height.

Strategically perched on a hill in Dakar, Senegal, the monument carefully sculpture shows a man, woman and child emerging from a volcano. Records agree that it was unveiled sometimes in April 2010 by the then President Abdoulaye Wade.

Le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine was erected as a mark of Senegal’s fifty (50) years of independence from France as their colonial masters.

Speaking about the meaning of the man, wife and child emerging from a volcano as seen in this edifice implies that Africans are strong and resilient - capable of overcoming the obvious challenges bedeviling it.

This emergence out of the volcano will yield remarkable strides and achievement in culture, science, and economic spheres. The infant in the monument represents generations that will rise and lead the continent into the modern world.

Sources say that the structure received great controversy and backlash. However it was designed by the Senegalese Architect Pierre Goudiaby.
