Odo Oba

River of ancient ancestry
Of a King, queens and deities,
Betrayal of innocent love
– An ill act to once a crystal beauty.

Rightful by the legitimate flow
There’s the known anguish in lustful love
Tacts and coins of polygamy
The saline power of women’s cove.

Old rooted rivalry and jealousy
Of the strongest cresting thievery
Domestic love bore channels to
An unending tempestuous war.

Cheated and depraved outrightly,
Splitting to the serene left low tide
Left from prison, left the irritant rage
Left the stormy and mucky cage.

Rippling, you created an abode
Down to the lustrous savannah
A sanctity for your ruthless children
You had hoped for transparent peace.

But alas, all peace and pieces taken; none given
Now on your seemingly resting place,
The pollution from your children persists.
Your covered-ear-dance of shame lives on.

Poisoning slowly your pathways,
They resolved; mother’s patience is ceaseless
Overflowing your banks, once, you chastise
Showing strength from torrential rainfalls.

But again, in your rivulet nature,
Mother’s patience is always ceaseless.
Your hope for peace and tranquil,
Now a burbling wish for liberation.
