A Review of the Blockbuster Movie “A Tribe Called Judah”
.
What's your tribe called? Well, theirs was called Judah. Yes, The Lion of the Tribe of Judah like you guessed. No wonder the movie had a lot of allusions to the bible, showing the role religion plays in many Nigerian homes.
The movie covers several other themes that centred on societal ills and living as a typical Nigerian. It covers themes of Brotherhood and love as seen among Jedidah Judah's children – Emeka Judah (Jide Kene Achufusi), Adamu Judah (Uzee Usman), Pere Judah (Timini Egbuson), Shina Judah (Tobi Makinde) and Ejiro Judah (Olumide Oworu), not excluding Ejiro’s faithful girlfriend, Testimony (Genoveva Umeh).
The brotherhood extends to Shina Judah’s gang of hoodlums led by Itele (Ibrahim Yekini), who through thick and thin stood with a member of their hood. We could also see the love of mothers, Grandma for Jedidah (Funke Akindele) and Jedidah for her children. The Judah children, though from different fathers of different tribes, were taught to always stand by one another when faced with a storm. Jerry (Nosa Rex) is also not exempted from filial love by his friend, Adamu Judah.
Another of the highlighted themes was greed, displayed by Mr Chigozie Onuaha (Uzor Arukwe) and Colette (Nse Ikpe Eyin), his managing director and also by Colette's childhood friend and husband, Modupe (Yvonne Jegede) and Deji (Boma Apkore).
Bribery, money laundering and thuggery are three prevalent ills in Nigerian society that the movie highlighted but not without portraying their consequences.
To think that the film could very well pass for a comedy would make me consider it as Funke Akindele’s best so far. As one of the directors of the movies, I had high expectations of her, especially after seeing “Battle on Buka Street” and she did not disappoint me in any way. The high-ranking movie featured top actors and actresses in the Nollywood Movie Industry like Fathia Balogun (Mama Caro) and Ebele Okaro Onyuike (Grandma) and they did not overplay their roles.
The movie itself is centred on a loving, generous but firm single mum and her five sons, who turned robbers overnight to save her from a deadly disease only to be in a battle with a real gang of thieves
On loopholes, I was too busy laughing and crying at the same time to notice the hitches in the movie but I would say, the costumes the Judahs wore to the mall could have singled them out as odd at the party if this were a real-life scene. They were the only ones who had masks on. Other cast at the party could have been masked too. Aside from this, the movie came out just as hyped and more.
Packed with action and thrilling suspense, quite uncommon with many Nollywood Movies, I would rate “A Tribe Called Judah” 9.5/10 and tag it proudly Nigerian. Not mincing words, this movie put me in such a good mood despite the tragic twist at its climax. Please call me, if there's a similar movie to watch, lol.
What tribe are you? I am with the Tribe Called Judah.
