A song we never sing

magpie-larks perch on oak tree
they peck, fonddle and dance free
sing duet of territorial defence

their voice lace canvas with ribbon
of ardour, snatch away every fuss

why do birds glissade and sing song?
they owe no one a dine to rupture their joy
not the anxious bloodlust to catch wind

than to astrogate for daily living

don't chase after the wind,
owe a dine to rupture your joy
than to astrogate for daily living

dance and sing like the magpie-lark
aware you will leave all behind

for unpredicted friends and foes!

The magpie-larks are such beautiful creatures doing so much with their little peckings and songs. It makes me appreciate how nature can bring such joy without needing anything else. They're living life on their own terms, which is pretty freeing. I guess that's why they don't need a daily dinner—they're already happy in their natural state.

That's such a creative take on birds! I wonder what inspired you to write about magpie-larks like this. It's so poetic.
