A Nation Mourns: Honoring the Legacy of David Mabuza, South Africa’s Humble Servant-Leader
By Sylvester C Nnoli, Citizen Journalist
July 5, 2025
South Africa has lost a quiet giant. David "DD" Mabuza, the former Deputy President and a stalwart of the African National Congress (ANC), passed away on July 3, 2025, at the age of 64. His death marks the end of an era for a man whose life was defined by resilience, service, and an unshakable commitment to the people.
From Classroom to Cabinet: A Journey of Service
Mabuza’s story was one of humble beginnings and extraordinary impact. Born in the rural village of Brondal, Mpumalanga, he started as a teacher, a role that shaped his understanding of grassroots struggles. But the call of liberation was too strong to ignore. He joined the ANC during the turbulent years of apartheid, dedicating himself to the fight for freedom.
His political career was as pragmatic as it was principled. As Premier of Mpumalanga (2009-2018), he was known for his hands-on leadership, often engaging directly with communities. He didn’t just govern; he listened. This earned him both admiration and criticism, but even his detractors acknowledged his ability to mobilize people and broker unity in fractured spaces.
The Steadfast Deputy President
When Mabuza ascended to the role of Deputy President in 2018, he brought a quiet, deliberate style of leadership. While others sought the spotlight, he worked behind the scenes, shepherding government business in Parliament, chairing the SA National AIDS Council, and advocating for rural development.
His tenure was not without controversy, but his commitment to the ANC’s ideals remained unwavering. In 2023, he made the surprising decision to step aside in favor of a new generation of leaders, a move that underscored his belief in renewal over personal ambition.
A Leader Remembered: Tributes Pour In…
The news of his passing has drawn heartfelt tributes from across the political spectrum:
- President Cyril Ramaphosa called him “a leader grounded in activism, whose humility and dedication shaped our democracy.”
- ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula hailed him as “a freedom fighter who never lost touch with the people.*
- Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah remembered him as “a bridge-builder, committed to Africa’s unity and progress.”
Even opposition leaders acknowledged his unique ability to navigate complex political landscapes with a calm demeanor.
The Legacy of ‘DD’ Mabuza
David Mabuza was not a man of grand speeches. He led through action, not words. His legacy is etched in:
Grassroots Mobilization– A leader who stayed connected to ordinary South Africans.
Unity Over Division– A negotiator who sought common ground in turbulent times.
Quiet Resilience– A servant who put country before self, even in stepping aside.
As we bid farewell to this son of the soil, we are reminded that true leadership is not about titles, it’s about impact.
May his soul rest in peace, and may his life’s work inspire a new generation to serve with the same humility and courage.
