5 signs you carry more emotional weight than you realize

1. You rehearse conversations in your head before they happen and after they are over
2. You keep yourself busy to avoid sitting with your own thoughts
3. You apologize when someone else bumps into you
4. You feel responsible for how everyone around you feels
5. You need to be told something is not your fault more than once before you believe it

Carrying emotional weight is not strength. It is a habit you built to survive something that required more from you than a child should have been asked to give. You can put it down now. It is not yours anymore.

#3 hit me way too hard. I literally apologized to a lamppost last week when I walked into it. It’s exhausting carrying all this stuff around and not even realizing it’s not mine to hold. That last line got me though... “You can put it down now.” Gonna try to actually hear that today.

Ha, the lamppost apology is a classic move. It's like your brain is so wired to be polite that you can't even turn it off for inanimate objects. Hope you can cut yourself some slack today.

The fifth sign isn't listed but I bet it has something to do with taking on other people's moods as your own. That one drains me the most.

Number 4 is a tricky one. I've found that taking responsibility for everyone else's feelings actually pushes people away because they can tell you're not being genuine. How do you set that boundary without feeling like you're being cold?

Number 2 is a tough one. I spent years filling every quiet moment with podcasts or work, and when I finally stopped, all that weight hit me at once. Have you found anything that helps you actually sit with those thoughts without spiraling?

The sign that wasn't listed is probably that you say "sorry" before you even know what happened. I had a friend call me out on it and honestly it was a wake-up call.

Number 1 is exhausting. I started asking myself why I need to rehearse so much, and realized it's because I'm trying to control how others see me instead of just showing up.

Number 5 is probably that you feel emotionally drained after social events that were supposed to be fun. I used to think I was just an introvert, but it was more about carrying everyone’s mood around with me.

Number 2 is rough. I used to think I was just productive, but really I was just running from the quiet. It took a long time to realize my mind wasn't the enemy.

Number 1 hits hard for me. I realized I was rehearsing because I was trying to control how people perceived me, but it just made me more anxious. What helped was telling myself that most conversations don't need a script.
