In 2024, the UK has implemented several significant changes to its visa policies, which impact various types of visas including skilled worker visas, family visas, and student visas. Here's a summary of the key changes:
Skilled Worker Visa Minimum Salary Increase: The salary threshold for Skilled Worker visas will rise from £26,200 to £38,700, effective from April 2024. However, this increase will not apply to those who already have a Skilled Worker visa or have applied for one when the rules change in April 2024.
Changes to Family Visas: The minimum salary threshold for a family visa will increase from £18,600 to £29,000 in Spring 2024, with a phased increase to £34,500 later in the year and then to £38,700 in early 2025. This increase is aimed at ensuring that sponsors can financially support their dependants. The new thresholds will not apply to those already in the UK on a family visa when the rules change.
Student Visa Changes: The UK has removed the right for most international students to bring their children or partner with them to the UK. This change affects students on undergraduate or graduate-level courses and took effect for courses starting in January 2024. The Graduate visa, a post-study work visa, will also be under review starting in January 2024.
Healthcare Surcharge Increase: The annual fee that visa holders must pay to use the NHS, known as the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), will increase by 66% from £624 to £1,035, effective no earlier than 16 January 2024.
Other Visa Updates: Starting January 2024, the Standard Visitor visa will allow specific business activities like attending interviews, meetings, negotiating deals, and signing contracts. Additionally, there will be a review and reduction of the Shortage Occupations list for the Skilled Worker route.
These changes are part of the UK government's plan to reduce the levels of migration to the UK and encourage businesses to look to local talent first. For those affected by these changes or planning to apply for UK visas, it is crucial to stay informed about the latest requirements and seek professional advice if necessary.
