📍Abeokuta, Nigeria
Omo, the way Abeokuta is changing now, you will be surprised when you come back after one year. Every corner, from Ita-Eko to Iberekodo, there is something new. The most visible development has to be the road rehabilitation. The Abeokuta-Ota-Lagos expressway is still work in progress, no lie, but you can already feel the difference at the toll gate. Less time stuck in traffic if you are heading to Camp or Adatan.
Inside town, the Ibara housing estate expansion is where all the real estate talk is. Plots that sold for five hundred thousand two years ago are now going for millions. If you have spare change, look around the Oke-Ijeun area. New bungalows and mini flats are popping up like mushrooms after rain. The government is also pushing for better drainage along the major roads near the Governor's Office and Oke-Mosan. That flooding at Ita-Oshin when the rain falls heavy? They have started clearing the canals there.
Another big one is the market development at Kuto. They are expanding the central market and adding a new modern section with lock-up shops. I went there last week with my mother to buy yams, and the new roofing and concrete floors look sharp. No more mud and water every time. Also, the new shopping complex at MKO Abiola Way, opposite the palace, is finally open. There is a big pharmacy, a bank, and some eateries. Very clean and organized.
For the youth, the new basketball court and mini stadium at the Abeokuta Sports Club, near the stadium junction, is a plus. And they are building a new traffic light system at the Iyana-Mortuary junction, which is a lifesaver because that spot used to be a death trap. Even the new Secretariat complex on Olusegun Obasanjo Way is almost completed. It will house many government offices moving from the old ones at Oke-Ilewo.
One thing I notice is that the nightlife is also getting a face lift. New lounges and small chops spots have opened on Idi-Aba Road and around the Total garden area. Not just for the big boys anymore, even for regular residents. Development is slow, but it is coming. If you ask me, the next five years will reshape Abeokuta completely.
