*Scrolling through my timeline and I had to stop when I saw this Guardian piece pop up.* Americans choosing where to live in Nigeria, and Port Harcourt not even getting a proper mention? I’m not surprised but let's be real. Those articles usually pick Lagos or Abuja based on international schools and expat bubbles. But if you are an American or any foreigner looking for a place with real soul, hustle, and less of that plastic feel, you’re missing out big time.

Let me tell you straight up. I have lived in Old GRA for years. That area alongside parts of New GRA and even some spots around Woji have become the real deal for expats wanting to blend in without feeling stranded. The new supermarket by the Garrison axis stocks all your imported goods now. And the nightlife? If you know where to go along Abacha Road, you will meet locals and foreigners chilling together like old buddies. No one cares where you are from as long as you respect the traffic around the Mile One bridge.

But here is the warning. Don’t trust those big real estate agents that promise you paradise on the island. I have seen friends pay premium rent near the Polo Club only to face poor drainage when the rain hits. Do your own footwork. Walk the street yourself. Talk to the security men at the gate. They know which neighbor has the stable generator and which compound floods at the first drizzle.

And for the love of everything, don’t believe the hype about security everywhere. Port Harcourt is generally safe if you are street smart. Avoid roaming around the Diobu axis late at night unless you are with a local who knows the ground. Even us locals don’t just wander there after dark. Stick to the GRA areas, old and new, and parts of Rumuogba. The new flyover by the airport road is opening up some nice communities too.

The truth is, residents here are warm. You will find Americans who fell in love with the food at Bole King and never left. You will find others who run businesses from their apartments in Woji and swear by the fresh fish market by the waterfront. Port Harcourt is not just a place to survive. It is a place to live loud.
