📍Ilorin, Nigeria

I swear I almost gatekept this one but the people deserve to know. We all know the popular spots like Chicken Republic and that one place next to Kwara Hotel, but the real magic in Ilorin is tucked away in neighborhoods where taxis don't even bother going.

Let me take you to **Abdulsalam's Kitchen** off Unity Road, right behind the old Ilorin West Local Government Secretariat. This is not a restaurant with a signboard. It is a shack with plastic chairs and a generator that hums like it's about to cry. But the jollof rice there? Chef's kiss. They use local palm oil and fresh ata rodo from Mandate Market. The goat meat pepper soup comes with chunks so tender you'd think the goat surrendered willingly. Go before 2pm or they close.

Over in **Taiwo Isale**, near the roundabout by the old Central Mosque, there's **Mama Bose's Ewa Agoyin Joint**. It is literally a zinc shed with a wooden bench. She serves beans so smooth they melt on your tongue, paired with agege bread you tear with your hands. The dodo (fried plantain) is caramelized to perfection. Locals queue there by 7am. If you see the Federal Road Safety officers eating there, you know it's legit.

Now, **Surulere** neighborhood, off the main challenge road, has **Alhaja's Amala and Gbegiri**. This place is hidden behind a pharmacy called "M&B Chemist." No Instagram, no menu. You walk in, shout "Madam, abeg me I want amala with ewedu and gbegiri," and she hands you a white nylon bag with the food. The amala is smooth like butter, no lumps at all. Their bushmeat is always fresh because she sources from the butchers at Ipata Market weekly.

For something different, try **Baba Gee's Suya Spot** at **Oko Erin**, just before the Kwara State Polytechnic gate. It opens only after 6pm, when the smoke starts rising like incense. He uses a secret dry rub that has ginger, cloves, and something sweet I couldn't identify. The suya is spicy enough to wake your ancestors but balanced so you don't need to chug water. Best with fresh sliced onions and a cold bottle of Maltina.

Final hidden gem: **Mummy Fati's Akara and Pap** on **Oloje Street** in the **Ganmo area**. She starts frying at 5:30am. Her akara balls are crispy outside, fluffy inside, and the pap is fermented properly so it's tangy. The location is tricky though: look for the blue gate with "Praise God" written on it, then follow the smell of groundnut oil.

These spots don't have WiFi or air conditioning, but they have what counts: food that tastes like home. For my Ilorin people, which hidden spot am I missing? Drop yours in the comments.

wait you're telling me there's a place that has amala as smooth as butter? i lived in ilorin for two years and never knew about Alhaja's spot. and the blue gate with 'praise god' for akara - that's the kind of directions only a real local can give. i'm literally screenshotting this. baba gee's suya sounds like my next weekend mission, i'll bring the maltina myself
