SLEEP
prologue
Fifteen years ago…
" We don't have much time! We have to do this now!" A priest insisted.
The rest of the gathering, about five of them, looked at him with a concerned look. But the priest was right, there was no time. They were currently in a temple in the middle of the night. They surrounded each other and right in the middle, was a woman dressed in rags and unkept. Her face and hair was a mess, hands and legs in shackles. She sat face down inside a drawn circle with a white chalk. Three lit candles surrounded the circle. But that was the least problem, because she was currently possessed by a demon. One that has plagued the town for over a month and killed a lot of people, and if they don't fix this now…
The woman would be next.
It took them weeks to finally locate the source of the plague, and find its latest victim.
" We have five minutes before the demon leaves this body and finds a new host," One informed them.
" But the exorcism didn't work! Or did we not get the words right?" Another question.
" No." They rested their gaze upon the young lady amongst them who spoke. She continued, " this thing feeds on people's fear and grief, it's not going to come out because obviously the woman suffered from both. We don't have much time left, so we need to give it what it wants… a new host right here, right now. One whose loss doesn't affect him."
" Who do you think is going to offer themselves up for that kind of thing hmm?" The first priest asked.
She glanced at him.
" Me."
" That's insane!"
" We can't do that!"
" You don't have a choice! You said it yourselves, no time. We don't have any idea who it's going to move into next, or what it will do. It's better we keep it close,I'll take it… I'll bear the sacrifice." She said without a crack in her voice.
There was silence in their midst.
" Child. You do know the consequences of what you are about to do?"
She nods in silence.
" Two minutes left."
" Do it now," she ordered and stepped into the circle.
The first one reopened the book and began the chant again, the rest joined him. In less than a second, the atmosphere of where they stood began to shift. They all felt it.
" It's time".....
CHAPTER 1
Blue Coast City...
Abigail was handed her bag by her older brother, Mark. They both stood at the main street awaiting the Uber they ordered for. It was late in the evening, and the sky was getting dark. But she preferred night travels.
" You know I can take off my shift tonight and drive you over there, it's just four hours," Mark pointed out.
She smiles at him. " I know." She adjusted her straight dark hair covering her blue eyes to the back. " I need to go alone, and besides that would be rude of me to drag you out of your job like that."
" I don't really mind."
" I know."
He glanced at her, " how long will you be gone for?"
She pulls her dark long coat close to her herself because of the cold drawing in. Blue Coast had always been known for it heavy cold weather occuring during the night. " As the spirit leads. " She finally answered.
Mark nods. He knew all too well not to argue with the strange words his sister speak of sometimes. But he knew everything she's ever done as always been for a reason.
" It's getting late... Oh, there it is."
He saw the Uber coming up ahead and it pulled over in front of them.
" I will see you soon Mark. And, don't worry. You will find the one woman who will be the flesh of your flesh, and the bone of your bones." She stated.
" God told you that."
" No. But you will know soon enough."
" Get in the car sis." He hugs her and she did the same. He pulls off and she got into the car. He waves at her as the car drove off...
" Where are we going miss?" The driver requested.
" Red Rivers." She said.
" Alright, bukle up. It's going to be a long four hours." He told her.
" I know." She muttered as she turned her gaze to the window.
Red Rivers...
For some reason, she had a heavy burden within her sprit to visit this place. She didn't know why, and has prayed severally concerning it, But God has been silent. She hasn't been there before but she did her reasarch.
Red Rivers is a small town outside of Blue Coast City. And the population there aren't that much and the area had been under development for a while now. But though what drew her attention more, was the weird meaning behind the town's name. Apparently, there is an actual river out there in the town that emits a red glowing color at night. Therefore it's name.
Her eyes began to get heavy again, the headache reoccurring ten times just like always. She immediately grabbed her bag beside her, unzipping it. She pulls out a container and opened the cap, taking out two tablets and swallowed. She relaxed her back and breathes in allowing the drug to do it work.
" Are you okay Miss?"
" Yes. Don't worry about me," she responds.
" Fool! I told you, you can't keep me here for long now. Your body has reached it's state of weakness."
" Be quiet," she whispered, " you don't have power over this body."
" You speak from a broken sense of sprit, but I have waited this long for my awakening. So tell me, are you finally ready to... SLEEP!!!"
" What..."
She didn't finish that sentence...
*******
James Morgan drove silently in a black wagon. It was dark now but he cared less, he needed to leave the house for one thing at least. The other one, he needed to go to church. His church, to see someone. Since he was called by God into ministry, things have never been the same. His family has not really been supportive of his work, and secondly Red Rivers wasn't exactly the town for believing in God or anything like that. In fact, he was surprised to even get a call that someone wanted to see him. In the church, for that matter.
Then he saw it.
A car lost control slamming into a tree with force enough to bend it over, crashing on the car. The Bonet itself got smashed as well. There was no other car on the road being it late, so the fact that they didn't see that tree is surprising. But that was the least of anyone's worries right now.
He pulls over, going to check if they were any survivors. He arrives at the car wreak, turning on his flashlight he had with him. There were two people in it; the driver and a woman. He couldn't tell if they were alive or not.
He immediately call 911.
But before anyone could answer, he starts to feel weak. His eyes heavy, he felt like his head was deeped inside of an oven. He staggered, his phone left his hand smashing on the floor.
" What's... going..." He trails off as his body hit the ground, passing out...
Six months ago...
Abigail was about to leave the church for that day, it was a Sunday. And she was done attending to everyone who wanted to see her. She then saw a woman approaching with her child, she was holding his hand for support.
They got to where she was standing.
" Please help my child, he's been unable to see for the past two years. I heard you heal people, please heal my son," she wailed in tears.
" I don't have the power to heal your son, but God does. I am only his servant. But, I want to ask you one question. Do you believe he can do it."
" Yes I do."
She nods and walks up to the young boy.
"What's his name?" She asked.
" Richard." His mother answered.
" Richard, can you hug me for a while."
" Okay." He hugged her.
" Don't let go okay. " She closed her eyes and began to pray. " Matthew 7 vs 7 : ask and it shall be given. God I need you to show your mighty sef to this family and restore what have been taken from him in Jesus name." She then prayed in silence for a few minutes.
Afterwards she realised him from the hug. " I am going to need you to open your eyes now Richard."
He did without any stress.
His mother screamed in joy and hugged her son.
" Mom I can see!!"
" Thank you Jesus!" His mother exclaimed and glanced at Abigail. " Thank you."
" Glory be to God. I will be expecting you on Sunday to come worship with us and share your testimony," she said.
" I'll be here I promise."
" I know."
The woman left with her child. Abigail brought out her phone to call Mark, but the screen suddenly cracked and blood began to rush out of it. She threw the phone on the floor, and it immediately stopped gushing out the red fluid.
She picked it up and a single word was written on it...
