Happy independence day to all Nigerians. Nigeria is my country and I have not been to another after 59 years of my life. That is to say I have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly history of this nation. From my experience I have 3 observations to make about Nigerians and Nigeria.
1. Nigeria as a nation is like an orphan who was born into a polygamous family. It has many siblings but no one cares about it. Everyone is just thinking about the part of the family inheritance that they can appropriate to themselves and not the collective till. This therefore leaves the nation and its people disorganised, disoriented and divided.
2. Nigeria and Nigerians are confused and gullible to the core. When I say Nigeria in this writeup I mean the collection of all Nigerians who decide the fate of the nation. As in 1 above, our inability to pursue our national heritage as family has left us divided in all fronts. Religious and political leaders, the privileged few among us, have used these to keep Nigeria and Nigerians down. They have left us feeling that they are our saviours. They tell us that our religious beliefs and political leanings should keep us apart, being suspicious of one another. While they are there wining and dining together.
3. We foolishly praise and protect those who are our enemies, both national and individual enemies. We cast and bind the devil in prayers but praise and worship our physical enemies. We spend billions to build worship centres and less on industries and other business enterprises that will positively contribute to national devdopment. We see the payment of tithe as obligatory and tax as waste. What a country?
To this end, as we are celebrating our 63 anniversary as a nation, we must individually sit down and ask ourselves some questions thus:
1. Is this country today worthy of my blood?
2. What have been my contribution to the decay or growth of the country and what do I need to change to make the country better.
3. What has religion and politics done to bring division amongst us and what can I do to change this?
4. Between tax and Tithe, zakkad, which is most important to the growth and development of the country? Give to Caeser what belongs to Caeser and to God what belongs to God.
5. Do I believe wholesome what religious and political people say? Search the scriptures and be guided by their teachings.
6. Who is my enemy, my exploiters or the devil? This will help in freeing us from fighting wrong battles.
7. What change do I need to do to make this country better? This must be deliberate and purposeful.
In conclusion, I wish that by this time next year we will have course to celebrate Nigeria better when we have changed our attitudes towards our nation destiny.
Happy independence day celebrations.
Long live Nigeria!!!!
