CHAPTER 12
THE JOKER
SETTING: LONDON STREET-ABA (AD-2024)
Mrs Loi-Loi speaking to Papaya on how she met Mr Mbakwe.
'We met at church'
He was handsome from head to toe.
He took my number by anointing,
He asked me to take a picture with him, which I saw no need to decline,
My friends began chanting my name,
The moment I reacted to go answer my friends,
He said,
Where do you think you are going?
I replied,
'To answer my friends',
'Let your friends come to you',
'Call them to come to you'.
I did what he said simultaneously,
'Hey, Regina I'm here, come!'.
She said,
'I want to tell you something',
He said,
'Tell her you are hungry and you are going to eat',
I did.
He asked
'Are you coming?'
I replied,
'Yes'.
He said,
'I meant, ask her, "Are you coming?"
I replied shamefully
'Okay',
I did it.
And immediately she started coming in the company of another friend.
Papaya being speechless.
' Can I say?' Papaya asking.
Mrs Loi-Loi looking at him.
'How do you maintain peace by fighting me?' Papaya asking Mrs Loi-Loi.
Mrs Loi-Loi leaving the kitchen, Papaya attempting to hold her hand and succeeded, Mrs Loi-Loi halting, but refusing to turn towards Papaya, nor making eye contact.
'What is on your mind?' Papaya asking
'I know you are intelligent, but honestly i did...' Mrs Loi-Loi receded her words.
'What do you mean?, what are you saying?' Papaya puting words in her mouth.
'See you in court' Mrs Loi-Loi blurting and leaving the kitchen.
Papaya standing in the middle of the kitchen, pondering what could be so contrived in Mrs Loi-Loi's heart.
Miss Nnukwuchi coming into the kitchen.
Papaya forcing himself to act normal immediately.
'Sir, are you okay?'
'Yes, yes don't mind me, i drank alcohol last night, i think I'm experiencing a hangover'
'What is your daughter's?' Papaya adding.
Miss Nnukwuchi pausing a while.
'I have no daughter, but Imo he is my only child, you know this, why asking me of my daughter's name?' Miss Nnukwuchi showing dismay.
'It was just a slip of tongue' Papaya defending himself, and walking out of the kitchen.
Papaya heading to Mrs Loi-Loi's apartment, at the door he eavesdrop under the conversation going on in the the apartment.
In Mrs Loi-Loi's apartment.
'What exactly happened to you that day, i saw the pictures, you looked terrible, but the doctors assured you were fine' Nneka saying.
' What caused your bleeding?' Nneka adding.
' Are you here to interrogate me?' Mrs Loi-Loi asking.
'You are my mother, and something happened to you, and I did not understand what happened, is it an outsider that would praise you!, nor tell your story?' Nneka appealing for a positive response from her mother.
'I know, you have an idea; what happens in this house even upstairs; you are the silent one, but i call you the joker, because you make the rest to believe, you are good, but not me, go to your mother, you don't even look like me, is it not obvious?' Mrs Loi-Loi blurting in anger.
'Nma, what did you just say?'
' I'm not your mother, you are my maids daughter, take off this expensive wears and start cleaning my house, get out!' Mrs Loi-Loi ordering Nneka.
'Who is my father?' Nneka asking suddenly.
'Get out of my apartment?, and let me not see you upstairs beyond the twelve floor, rubbish, out!'
Nneka walking out the apartment, Papaya's eyes and hers met, but both lips were sealed.
Nneka walking to the kitchen furiously, while Papaya proceeded into the room.
Mrs Loi-Loi crossing her leg and sipping her wine.
' You did not actually say all that you said, right?'
'And, what if I did?'
'I only came to play football, before facing the war' Papaya teasing.
'Did you just say football?'
Papaya nodding.
'You imposter, how dare you use my husband's romance on me?'
'Because that is the only language you understand!'
(kwaaaaaaaaa!!!)
A plate broke in the kitchen loud enough, and accompanied by back and forth speeches.
Papaya and Mrs Loi-Loi coming downstairs only to see Miss Nnukwuchi and Nneka unveiling the truth through banter.
'You killed Mr Mbakwe, your father and sold his body parts for money true or false?' Miss Nnukwuchi busting Nneka.
'What pains me the most is that you equally killed my caring husband, who happens to be Mr Mbakwe's driver, by plotting a fatal accident, why?, you heartless, and godless daughter of Jezebel' Miss Nnukwuchi adding.
'I stay in this house from January to December, every year for what?, how could I ever marry?, nor make wealth?, only what I'm getting is people deciding on my behalf, I'm not educated because Mr Mbakwe thought I was too brilliant, yes, I agree I'm naturally eloquent and that is his gift passed down to me, I'm the brain behind Louise mathematics prowess, and the pillar behind Thomas religious anchor, but no one allowed me to say a word, I'm even without any penny from Mr Mbakwe assets, I'm known by people you don't know, I'm the joker, it is me, do you recognize me? mother!' Nneka saying.
'You do not deserve a place in this house anymore' Mrs Loi-Loi blurting
'Leave this house now!' Mrs Loi-Loi adding.
' My soul belongs to you, are you also casting me away?' Nneka asking Papaya.
'You brought an immeasurable pain to the lady of the house for killing her husband' Papaya talking while wrapping his hands on Mrs Loi-Loi's back side.
'You are in luck she only asked you to leave all this behind, but stay alive, if I was in her shoes I would have your head for supper'
Mrs Loi-Loi looking at Papaya, while she ignores where his touching
'Leave this house without a property' Papaya ordering Nneka.
Papaya and Mrs Loi-Loi alighting downstairs together as they escort Nneka out of MBAKWE MANSION, into the street of LONDON street- aba.
'My final words, the press would not hear of this, if you remain an outcast; in proximity to this MANSION is to your own peril, bye!'.
