📍Zaria, Nigeria
Wunmi Mosaku winning big at the Baftas is huge for us here in Zaria. I mean, we don’t get to see our own people shine on that global stage every day. Akinola Davies Jr too - that's serious talent from our side getting the recognition they deserve. When I saw the news on BBC, I felt that pride right in my chest.
This is important because it shows our young creatives in Zaria that the dream is possible. It’s not just about Lagos or Abuja - we have people who started from places like Samaru or around the old city, and now they’re taking over British awards. For anyone in Zaria who writes, directs, or acts, this is the motivation you need. No excuses.
But let’s also be real: if you’re not following what these winners are doing, you’re missing out. Wunmi Mosaku’s work in things like "Lovecraft Country" or "His House" is the kind of storytelling we need to study. And Akinola Davies Jr - his short film "Lizard" touched on themes we can all feel here. If you can find those online, watch them. They’re a masterclass.
For my people in Zaria who want to get into film or acting, I recommend checking out the local workshops that sometimes happen around the theatre arts department at ABU, Zaria. There’s also a small but growing film community that meets around the old cinema spot near Sabon Gari. Don’t sleep on that.
To the winners - keep pushing. To the rest of us - support local art. And if you haven’t seen any of these winners’ work, start today. It will inspire you.
