Unexpected Visit
I'm reminded of the anniversary of an armed robbery attack on my house on 30th of June 2013. It was around 3 am when some agents of darkness broke down the window protector of my living room with a humongous rock; after a successful derailment of one of the aluminum slide windows of the living room of our two-bedroom bungalow. Our lakeside house, which had been home for barely two years, was being violated for the second time by bandits. The first attack was deadlier; there were six hoodlums.
I jumped out of bed and quickly went to the living room where I was sure the din originated; the din that rudely ended my sleep. The hoodlums had struck the metal protector on the window so hard, it fell just after one blow. In my living room stood a couple of hoodlums who had entered through the broken window. They asked me for N1.5 million. Startled by their audacious request, I walked back to the bedroom as if to grant their request. They followed me closely then realized I hadn't any cash. I asked them to help themselves with our material possessions which they did. But not before they bound me. They took all our mobile phones, a 40" LED TV, a couple of my shoes, clothes, jewelry, etc. They were still busy ferrying our belongings out of the house when I summoned the courage to reach out for my machete; which was supposed to be directly under the bed. Unfortunately, it wasn't there. A gardener had borrowed it earlier in the day. One of the hoodlums who was still in the bedroom with us noticed I had freed myself and was shocked. He shouted to his partner in crime: "Area"! "Area!". I perceived more trouble and had to muster more courage. I ran toward the hoodlum that came from the living room and we both dealt each other blows. The other hoodlum that screamed, who was skinnier, had baled through the backdoor which they forced my wife to open early on. At the earliest chance, my wife ran out and screamed into the dead of the night. The hoodlum trading blows with me disengaged and ran out like 'a bat out of hell', and escaped into the pitch dark. I ran after my wife and tried to sound an alarm (as loud as I could) to alert the neighbors, but no one dared to come out. The hoodlums got away. The kids were all along tucked in bed and enjoying their sleep. But my wife and I kept vigil till the sun came up.
