LOL this Zikoko article trying to tell us that living in Lagos is expensive. As if we didn't already know. But the real joke is them acting like staying in Ilorin is some kind of fallback plan. Let me put things in perspective for anyone reading this from my side of town.
I moved back to Ilorin from Lagos two years ago. Was paying 1.8 million naira for a two-bedroom in Ikeja. Here in Ilorin, I'm paying 350k for a three-bedroom at Oko Erin, that is off University Road near the Oke Ogun area. My landlord even threw in a borehole and prepaid meter like it's nothing. Meanwhile my cousin in Lekki is still crying about rent that keeps jumping every year.
The article mentions places like Banana Island, Ikoyi, Victoria Island. Nobody is shocked. But even Surulere and Yaba are now out of pocket. A friend renting around UNILAG side is paying 1.2 million for a face-me-I-face-you. That is insanity.
Here is what I tell my people back in Lagos. Come home to Ilorin. You can get a decent apartment at GRA, Taiwo Road, or even along Airport Road for less than half what you pay in Lagos. If you have a remote job or run a business, your money will stretch further. The traffic is manageable. You can actually sleep without generator noise all night.
But I get it. Lagos has the hustle energy. The opportunities. The nightlife. Ilorin is quieter. More traditional. You won't find that same buzz. But if you are tired of paying rent that eats your salary and you want to actually save money, Ilorin is a solid option. Just know what you're coming for.
The article is right that expensive areas exist everywhere. But in Ilorin, even our "expensive" areas like GRA or Adewole won't break your bank like Lagos will. Come and see for yourself.
