📍Abeokuta, Nigeria
I have been watching the changes around Abeokuta for a while now, and it is good to finally see some real local development happening. Not the kind that makes big promises and disappears, but the small, steady work that actually improves how we move and live.
Take the Ibara neighborhood for example. That stretch from Ake to Ibara Garage used to be a nightmare during harmattan. The dust was choking. But over the last year, the community and the local council actually patched up the worst parts. Now, the okada riders can go faster without shaking our bones, and the small shops along that road are doing better because more people walk there.
Another spot that is changing is the area around Olumo Rock. I know the rock is our big tourist attraction, but the road leading to it from Onikolobo was always a mess. They finally built proper drainage there. No more floods after a heavy rain. It makes a big difference for the women selling fried yam and fish by the roadside. Their tables don't get washed away anymore.
But I want to talk about something closer to home. The Adatan market area. That place is always busy, but they started a new waste collection system a few months ago. It is not perfect, but the smell is improving. The traders in the meat section are happier. It shows that even simple things like proper waste management can change a neighborhood.
The real development I am seeing is on the outskirts too. Kwansare and Obantoko. More people are building there because the land is cheaper, and the roads are slowly getting better. The new housing estates going up are not just expensive ones for the rich. There are cooperatives helping locals build affordable homes. I know a family from Ake who moved to a new estate near Oke Ilewo, and their life improved because the environment is cleaner and the roads are passable.
A few things we still need though. The street lights in Ita-Eko and Isale-Igbe are still not working properly. And the traffic at the Panseke roundabout needs a proper solution. But I will take these small wins. Development is not always a big government project. It is the market drainage, the road patch, and the new school that opens quietly.
If you live in Abeokuta, what changes have you noticed in your area? Let me know in the comments. Let us keep pushing for better.
