"Black Tax" wey dey swallow our salary every month. I swear, e don become serious mata for many of us here for Port Harcourt. My friend wey work for one oil and gas company for GRA Phase 2, e dey complain say e no fit save anything because e dey carry the whole family burden. Every month, e dey send money for younger ones school fees, na him dey pay house rent for mama house for Aba Road, and e still dey send transport fare for that uncle wey no get job.
But make I tell you something. The pressure for Port Harcourt special pass. If you get work for any of the big companies for Trans Amadi or for the banks along Azikiwe Road, your pipo go think say you dey print money. Dem no understand say after tax, rent, transport, and feeding for our city wey cost plenty, little remain. I know one babe wey work for a hospital for Elekahia, she dey sent 70% of her salary home every month. Her siblings for school, her parents for market, even distant relative wey see her as the only hope.
The truth be say, this Black Tax e get two side. On one side, e be our culture. We suppose help our own. But the problem come when people no plan. When you just dey give without thinking about your own future, you go suffer later. I have fit advise my younger ones make dem learn to open conversation with family. Set boundaries. Tell dem say you get your own bills too. No be say you wicked, na to wise.
Also, try find a side hustle. For Port Harcourt, plenty opportunities for extra income. You fit start small business for Mile 1 market, trade for Rumuokoro, or even do logistics with your car. Anything wey fit reduce the pressure. The government suppose help us with better jobs and cost of living, but while we dey wait, we fit manage am.
