Bola was breathing sharply, restlessly fidgeting, getting lost in her imagination, as she wished what she had witnessed wasn’t true. “I would never forgive myself if this could be the reality,” she thought.

She moved closer to her mother who was lying on the floor in a pool of blood, hoping she would still be alive. She grabbed the body, and was devastated when she realized her mom was dead. Furiously, she ran to her father and almost knocked into him before she was held back.

“You killed her,” “you killed my mother,” “you monster”—she kept screaming as she was being dragged away.

She had witnessed her father beat her mother countless times, but she couldn’t do anything when her mother didn't talk about it to anyone. She had lost her mother right before her death, as she became a shadow of herself. She changed physically, emotionally, and mentally.
She could have said something since then—she regretted it.

She looked at her uncle who was weeping in a corner and felt a surge of anger towards him. He had always been the one to silence her, preventing her from speaking out about her mother's abuse. If only her mother had felt able to confide in someone, maybe things could have been different.

She despised her father and lamented the day she was born into his world. She despised him for the torment he subjected her mother to and for the anguish and suffering he had inflicted upon her without realizing.

She recalled vividly her time in school: once the best student, she found herself severely impacted by her father's violent treatment of her mother, rendering her unable to concentrate on her studies as she had before. The echoes of her mother's cries haunted her every time she tried to read, causing her to become disengaged from her academic pursuits. Her disdain for her father only intensified.

IN THE COURT…

Her father could not be prosecuted as there was no evidence to prove he actually killed his wife. He managed to absolve himself by presenting evidence that his wife was mentally disturbed and sometimes harmed herself due to the depression she had been struggling with since she was eight years old, following her mother’s death. Consequently, he was ultimately acquitted.

I will forever live with the guilt of my mother“s death, because I killed her,’ Bola muttered weakly.

Dear readers;
Violence at home doesn’t just hurt the children in the moment; it affects their entire future, shaping who they become.
Let’s strive to create a society devoid of domestic violence, ensuring that upcoming generations can flourish in an environment of safety, love, and respect, recognizing that every individual is entitled to tranquility within their household.

NOTE: Do not wait until a person dies before speaking out against violence, as failing to act may result in culpability for their demise.
