She parts my scalp into rivers
her fingers tracing Genesis
each twist a whispered covenant
against my nape.

The kitchen smells of coconut oil and Saturday
my grandmother’s hands in the steam
weaving psalms into the roots
while the radio hums old blues.

Her comb glides like a razor
splitting silence into sections
I am a strand held taut
between her thumb and a prayer.

When she finishes the last braid
I feel the weight of ten thousand ancestors
crowned in fiber and faith
the gentle ache of being remembered.

this hit me right in the chest. my mom used to do my hair every sunday evening before school and i'd fall asleep to the smell of coconut oil and her humming. i never thought of it as prayer but... yeah. that's exactly what it was. thank you for writing this
