“IS THAT GARETH’S CAR?”

The Lampteys’ family house was warm and cosy, perfectly embodying the essence of a Ghanaian home. The comfortable furniture was arranged
neatly, inviting anyone who entered to relax and unwind.

The aroma of beans, which was being cooked up in the kitchen spread into the living room, adding a touch of homey comfort. Caleb and Hailey were conversing as they reclined on the sofa, when Ursula walked in. A gentle smile was plastered on her face as she greeted her parents.

“Ursula, my daughter, how was your day at school?” he asked. Taking a seat, she replied, “It was good, dad. I had a great
lesson with my economics students. I heard you had a joint promotion with Waakye on Wheels today. How did it go?”

Sharing a look with her husband, Hailey answered, “It was a success, my dear. We made quite a bit of money today. People really loved the combination.” Ursula beamed with pride, acknowledging her parents’ hard work.

“Wow, I’m thrilled. Your hard work is paying off.” But just as the family settled into their comfortable conversation, their peaceful ambiance was abruptly
interrupted by a loud crash outside.

Caleb rushed to the window, his heart pounding in his chest. “What’s happening outside?” Hailey asked him. “It seems to be a car accident,” Caleb replied, still peering through the curtains.

“Oh no, that’s sad,” Ursula mumbled as she hurried outside. Her parents followed suite, their hearts in their mouths. Upon arrival, Hailey gasped. “I hope it’s not what I’m thinking, but is that Gareth’s car??”

Ursula observed intently. “You’re right, mum. It looks like it.” She made a quick decision. She knew she had to see if it was Gareth, and that he was okay – after all, he was her friend.

Running over to the scene, her instincts took over. A small crowd had gathered around the car, which had apparently skidded off the road and crashed into the bark of a tree. The victim was bleeding from the head, and was unconscious.

Ursula yelled urgently upon recognizing the victim as Gareth. “Someone, please call an ambulance! He needs help!” As the ambulance rushed to the scene, Ursula began to worry. She checked Gareth’s pulse, desperately hoping he would be alright.

Her parents also drew closer and
proceeded into the street, their expressions reflecting deep concern. “Stay with me, Gareth. Help is on the way,” Ursula whispered.

Finally, the paramedics arrived and started tending to Gareth’s injuries. “His pulse is strong. Let’s bandage his wound before taking him to the hospital,” one of the paramedics said, assessing the situation. Ursula followed the ambulance to the hospital, her mind filled with thoughts and concerns.

The waiting room was filled with a handful of eagerly awaiting anxious family members and friends. Settling into a seat outside the room where Gareth was being treated, Ursula couldn’t help the racing thoughts in her mind.

“I hope he will be okay. How did this
accident happen? Why was he driving so recklessly?” she pondered. Eventually, the doctors came out and approached Ursula, bringing a sense of both dread and hope.

“His injuries are not severe,” the doctor reassured her. “He had a minor concussion, but no brain damage. We
have stitched his wound and given him painkillers. He should make a full recovery soon.”

Relieved tears welled up in Ursula’s eyes. “Thank you, doctor. Can I see him?” she asked, her voice trembling. The doctor nodded. “Yes, you can go in. He’s resting now.” Taking a deep breath, Ursula entered the hospital ward.

She approached Gareth’s bedside, concern etched on her face. “Gareth, how are you feeling?” she asked softly. Sitting on the bed, a bandage wrapped around his head, Gareth looked up with surprise.

“I’m okay. Wow, you came to see me too? The doctors informed me that you were the one that brought me here. Thank you so much,” he said gratefully. “Hmm, now I feel so embarrassed about what happened at the restaurant. I must have hurt you and Malcolm very badly. I’m truly sorry. Can you forgive me?”

Hesitant at first, Ursula took a moment to think. “It’s going to take time to rebuild trust, but holding onto anger won’t help any of us. I forgive you, but I hope you’ve learned from this experience.” Sincerity filled Gareth’s eyes as he nodded.

“I have. It won’t happen again.” In the midst of their conversation, Ursula received a call from her mother, concerned about Gareth’s situation.
She assured her that it was nothing too serious and that he would be discharged soon.

Relief washed over her parents, evident in the sigh they released. Ursula smiled,
thankful that Gareth was going to be alright. As the chapter came to a close, the intricate thread of love, forgiveness, and family resilience took hold, setting
the tone for the journey that lay ahead in their lives.
