A SURPRISE INVITATION
The following day, Ursula woke up with a mix of excitement and anxiety. Her upcoming reunion with Gareth dawned on her, and she couldn’t resist the urge to replay their conversation from the previous night.
As she made her way to school, the familiar rhythm of student chatter and the vibrant atmosphere of the courtyard surrounded her once again. The sounds of laughter and the occasional ringing of bells provided a backdrop to her swirling thoughts. Ursula’s mind drifted back to that peaceful scene in her cozy bedroom, where she had been interrupted from her slumber by Gareth’s unexpected call.
Relaxing on her bed, Ursula had felt a sense of tranquillity wash over her. But her peace had been disturbed by the ringing of her phone, slowly drawing her back to reality. Frowning, she reached for her phone, wondering who could be calling at such an hour.
“Hello?” she answered tentatively, her guard up, unsure of what to expect.
Abena’s Diner, suggesting they reconnect and reminisce. Ursula had hesitated, unsure if accepting his invitation was the right choice.
“I’m not sure if that’s a good idea,” she confessed.
Undeterred, Gareth had urged her, his voice laced with excitement, “Come on, it’ll be great to see you! How about meeting at 4:30 pm? I’ll be free, so anytime works for me.”
With a thoughtful pause, Ursula agreed. “Okay, sure. Let’s meet at 4:30 pm. I’ll check my schedule and let you know when I’ll be free.”
Gareth had expressed his eagerness and gratitude before they ended the call. Ursula had been left lying in bed, contemplating the upcoming reunion, her thoughts racing, torn between memories and uncertain expectations.
'What am I getting myself into?' she whispered to herself, allowing a flicker of hope to mingle with her worries. 'Well, catching up with an old friend can’t hurt.'
As the present day unfolded, Ursula found herself seeking the advice of her friends Laura and Abigail during their break. Uncertain and hesitant, she approached them, hoping they would help her gain clarity.
“Hey guys, I need your advice on something,” Ursula finally spoke.
Their eyes sparkled with curiosity as Laura eagerly responded, “What’s up, Ursula? Tell us!"
Taking a deep breath, Ursula gathered her thoughts. “It’s Gareth, my childhood friend. We got separated a while back when we went to different universities. He called me yesterday and suggested meeting up.”
Laura’s face lit up with excitement. “That’s amazing! You should go for it, Ursula. It’s been so long since you last saw each other!”
Ursula’s hesitation persisted as she voiced her concerns. “I don’t know. I mean, back in high school, he only liked me for my looks.”
Abigail stepped in, her reassuring voice soothing Ursula’s doubts. “People change. Maybe he just wants to catch up and see how you’re doing. Give him a chance – you never know what might happen.”
Pensive and contemplative, Ursula mulled over their advice. “I guess… but why did he have to get my number from my parents?”
Laura offered a suggestion, her eyes filled with empathy. “Maybe he wanted to surprise you, or perhaps he had no other way to contact you. Sometimes things happen unexpectedly.”
Ursula, still torn between doubt and curiosity, sighed, “I suppose so… I’m just not sure if it’s a good idea.”
Hesitant but ultimately driven by her longing for answers, Ursula came to a decision. She would respond to Gareth’s invitation, taking a chance on rekindling their friendship.
With determined fingers, she typed out her message to Gareth. “Alright, let’s meet up on Sunday.”
After pressing send, she anxiously waited for a reply. A few minutes passed before her phone chimed, signalling a response from Gareth.
“Great! Sunday it is. Looking forward to seeing you,” his text read.
Ursula read the message, and thought to herself, ‘I hope I made the right decision,’ before carrying on with her day’s activities.
