In a move that has drawn widespread commendation, the Yobe State Government has announced plans to execute the 2026 budget without borrowing, reaffirming Gov. Mai Mala Buni’s commitment to financial discipline and the long-term prosperity of the state.

The disclosure was made in Damaturu by the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Muhammad Gagiyo, during a briefing with journalists. Gagiyo revealed that the state has developed a revenue strategy capable of funding all major projects in the 2026 fiscal year without resorting to loans.

According to him, 90 percent of the projected revenue will come from federal statutory allocations and internally generated sources, while the remaining 10 percent will be secured through grants from development partners, including the World Bank and the NG-CARES initiative.

The commissioner noted that Governor Buni’s insistence on accountability and prudent spending is what made the debt-free plan achievable.

“This administration is not considering any form of borrowing for the 2026 budget; we will work strictly with what is available, expand revenue channels, and continue attracting grants,” he said.

This move reflects a government that thinks beyond political cycles—one that is determined to build without leaving behind a burden of debt. Many residents see it as proof that the Buni administration is managing public resources with transparency and respect for the future of the state.

At a time when several states rely on borrowing to execute basic responsibilities, Yobe’s debt-free approach stands out as a rare show of financial responsibility and visionary leadership.

With this decision, the Buni administration has again positioned Yobe as a state where governance is not just about completing projects but doing so in a sustainable, accountable, and people-focused manner.
