Farmers, pastoral associations, and agricultural experts across Yobe State have applauded Governor Hon. (Dr.) Mai Mala Buni, FCIA, CON, COMN, for unveiling a comprehensive livestock development roadmap aimed at positioning the state as Nigeria’s leading hub for animal production.
Their reactions followed the governor’s declaration on Tuesday during the swearing-in of the new Commissioner for Livestock Development at Government House, Damaturu, where he announced massive investments in veterinary care, water systems, fodder banks, and large-scale vaccination against livestock diseases.
Leaders of farmer unions say the initiative is a long-awaited step that will reduce livestock losses, strengthen local markets, and improve the livelihoods of rural families.
Mallam Adamu Musa, a cattle breeder from Fika, described the plan as “a rescue mission for herders who have suffered from animal diseases, poor veterinary services, and water scarcity.”
“We have never witnessed this level of government commitment. This will save our animals, boost production, and improve the economy of our communities,” he said.
Women dairy farmers in Bade and Jakusko also expressed optimism, saying better veterinary support and fodder availability will increase milk supply and support small household businesses.
Agriculture stakeholders noted that very few states in Nigeria have created a dedicated livestock ministry and praised Governor Buni for giving livestock development a clear policy direction.
“This is what modern agriculture looks like—planning, investment, and sustainability,” said a senior livestock consultant in Potiskum.
Analysts believe the new livestock roadmap will open opportunities for meat processing, dairy industries, and animal export, transforming Yobe into a major player in the livestock value chain.
With the new commissioner now in office, farmers say they are hopeful that implementation will begin immediately, delivering results that will lift rural communities and strengthen food security.
