📍Benin City, Nigeria

If you're serious about building up Benin City, you need to know where your money is actually staying in the community. Too many of us rush to big corporate spots or out-of-town chains, forgetting the people who've been grinding here for years. I've been making a deliberate effort to spend at local-owned spots, and here are some of the real ones you need to know.

First, stop sleeping on **Chidinma's Kitchen** right off **Akpakpava Road**, near the bend by **Uselu Market junction**. They do the best peppered snail and yam pottage in the city, hands down. No contest. The owner, Mama Chidi, has been running that corner for over a decade. She knows everyone by name and will add extra pepper if you ask nicely. Support her and you're supporting her three kids through university.

For your fresh produce and household staples, head to **Osas Garden Fresh** on **Sapele Road**, just before **Ogbemudia Stadium**. It's not a fancy supermarket, but the vegetables are straight from Osas's farm in **Igueben**. He doesn't sell pre-packaged, wrinkled stuff. You get groundnuts, tomatoes, and bitterleaf that actually taste like something. He's also one of the few places where you can get fresh coconut milk on a Saturday morning.

If you need any tailoring or fabric work, you must check **Oba Textiles & Designs** on **Ring Road**, inside the shopping complex behind **Emotan Statue**. That area is full of small tailors, but Mr. Oba is different. He does traditional attires, agbadas, and iro and buba with precision. He also employs three young men from **Uzebu quarters**, teaching them the trade. Your money there goes directly to skill development in the neighborhood.

For repairs - electronics, phones, or generators - go to **Mighty Fix** on **Ekiosa Road**, near the **Ekiosa Market** gates. The owner, Efe, is a quiet guy who can fix anything. He once brought my neighbor's generator back to life after three other places said it was dead. He charges fair prices and doesn't inflate because you look desperate. Plus, he trains apprentices from **Oliha area** for free.

Let me not forget **Blessings Books & Stationery** on **Mission Road**, close to **Holy Trinity Church**. This is the only black-owned bookstore left in that strip. They stock local authors, novels, and school supplies at lower prices than the big shops. The owner, Blessing, also runs a small reading club for kids on weekends. If you want to support literacy in Benin, this is the spot.

Final tip: for quality second-hand clothes, skip the big markets and go to **Mercy's Vintage** at **Oba Market**, left side of the **Oba of Benin's Palace** gate. Mercy personally sources and cleans every piece. She knows her fabrics. Mention that I sent you, and she'll show you the premium section hidden at the back.

Stop scrolling and start spending intentionally. These businesses are the backbone of our city. Every naira you drop at a local spot stays in the neighborhood.
