📍Onitsha, Nigeria

You think you know Onitsha food? Let me put you on to the spots we locals actually queue for, not the ones that pop up on influencers' timelines.

First, head to **Upper Iweka** area, but don't stop at the main road. Go into the lane behind Peace Mass Transit park. There's a small joint called **Mama Ngozi's Kitchen** that serves the best **banga soup and starch** you will ever touch. No signboard, just a yellow bench outside. If you go after 2pm, the pepper soup is gone. Trust me, it's worth the dust and noise.

Next, take a walk down **Zik Avenue**, towards the Fegge side. Behind the old **Golden Guinea** brewery building, there's a woman called **Mama Chidi** who sells **Nsala soup** with fresh catfish every Wednesday and Saturday. She starts at 7am and finishes by 10am. That's it. If you miss her, you missed Onitsha. Her place is opposite the blue gate with the faded Guinness sign. No website, no delivery. Just vibes.

Over at **Bridge Head**, near the **Main Market** entrance by the old **NITEL** building, you will find **Iya Basira's Amala and Gbegiri**. She has been there for 25 years. The amala is smooth like baby skin. She uses real locust beans, not that artificial seasoning. Locals from Asaba cross the bridge just for this. The spot is a wooden kiosk with a red umbrella. Don't be surprised to see a senator eating beside a tyre repair man.

If you want something lighter, go to **Odoakpu** neighborhood, by the **St. Joseph's Catholic Church** junction. There's a small shack called **Sugar's Fish**. They fry fresh tilapia with a spicy pepper sauce that will clear your sinuses. They serve it with boiled yam or fried plantain. The owner, Sugar, opens at 4pm. Before 6pm, everything sells out. Bring cash.

End your tour at **GRA** area, on **Bida Road** close to the **NEPA office**. Behind that yellow building with the barbed wire, there's a quiet family spot run by **Madam Ada**. Her **ofe oha** with fufu is legendary. She uses fresh vegetables, no powdered nonsense. She serves only on Sundays and it feels like eating at your grandmother's house. Very calm, no loud music.

These are not the places you see on billboards. They are the real Onitsha. Carry small change, be ready to sit on a plastic chair, and come hungry. Welcome home.

Mama Chidi's nsala soup is no joke o. I remember one time I drove from Enugu just to get there before 10am, missed her by like 15 minutes and I was so vexed I almost cried lol. The banga soup spot sounds fire too, gonna try that next time I'm in Onitsha. You forgot to mention the woman near the old烟草market that sells ukodo on Fridays though... or maybe that's just my grandma's secret spot lmao.
