If you're thinking of moving to Abeokuta or you just got here and are wondering where your money goes, let me give you the real gist. This isn't the Lagos life wey go finish your account in one week. Abeokuta is gentler on your pocket, but you still need to plan well. Here's my honest breakdown based on living around Ibara, Ita-Oshin, and the Panseke area.
**Accommodation**
For a self-contained one bedroom in a decent area like Ibara GRA or Oke-Ilewo, you are looking at between N350,000 to N500,000 per year. If you want something cheaper, head to areas like Adatan or Ita-Eko where a one bedroom can go for N200,000 to N300,000 yearly. But be careful with old houses around Totoro road - the roof might leak during the rainy season. Two bedroom apartments in Soyinka Road or Onikolobo range from N600,000 to N900,000 per year. If you want single room (face-me-I-face-you), places like Laderin or Iyana-Osi can give you N80,000 to N120,000 annually.
**Food and Market Prices**
The biggest shock for new people is that food is not as cheap as people say. A tuber of yam at the Sapon market is now around N2,500 to N3,500 depending on size. At Ita-Oshin market, a paint bucket of rice is about N7,000 to N8,000. For vegetables, a bunch of ugu at Oke-Ijeun market is N300 to N500. Tomatoes and pepper are still expensive - a small paint bucket of fresh tomatoes can hit N2,500 in the dry season. If you cook for yourself, budget at least N10,000 to N15,000 per week for a small family.
**Transportation**
This one is where Abeokuta is friendly. A bike from Ijaye to Kuto is about N200 to N300. If you take keke (tricycle) from Ita-Oshin to Panseke, it's N100 per drop. For longer trips, like Panseke to Oke-Mosan, a bus is N300. If you live inside Ibara estate and work at the Federal Medical Centre area, you can manage N500 daily for transport. But watch the fuel price - bike and keke drivers have increased fares slightly.
**Utilities and Miscellaneous**
Electricity prepaid meter in my area around Isale-Oba costs about N5,000 monthly for a small flat. But we don't get light 24/7, so you need to budget for generator fuel - N2,000 to N3,000 weekly for a small generator. Water is not too bad. You can buy a drum of 50 liters at Sapon for N200. If you use borehole water at home, your landlord might add N500 to N1,000 per month.
**The Real Bottom Line**
For a single person living moderately in Abeokuta, N150,000 a month is comfortable if you are renting a self-contained. For a small family of three, expect N250,000 to N300,000 monthly. The trick is to shop at local markets like Sapon or Ita-Oshin rather than fancy supermarkets at Oke-Mosan. And if you can find a room in the Satellite Town area near the Federal Polytechnic, you save a lot. Honestly, Abeokuta is still one of the best places to live in the South-West if you are not chasing Lagos style. Just know your area and don't waste money on things you don't need.
