Religion is an attempt made by man to relate with the transcendent (being, object and concept). It is important because it shapes our understanding of the world and gives a perspective from which to approach life.
Without a perspective it is very difficult to possibly contain the loads of information that will be thrown to us by the universe. Thus religion answers the universal question of "How do I live".
