My parents just celebrated 35 years. My best friends are at 12. After watching them (and a decade of my own trial and error), I've noticed the couples who last 10+ years don't have a secret. They just do these 5 things differently.

**1. They fight about the dishes (but not about the person)**

The couples who last avoid personal attacks. They argue about the wet towel on the bed or who forgot to take out the trash. But they never say "you always" or "you never." They fight the problem, not each other.

**2. They schedule "state of the union" chats (yes, really)**

Once a month, my friends sit down with zero phones. They ask three things: How are we doing? What do you need from me? What do you want more or less of? It sounds stiff. But it prevents the slow drift where resentment builds because you assume they know what you're thinking.

**3. They have separate hobbies (and guard that time fiercely)**

The couples who last don't do everything together. My friend runs marathons. Her husband builds furniture. They meet for dinner and have something new to talk about. Space creates magnetic tension. Clinginess kills it.

**4. They apologize with action, not just words**

"I'm sorry" means nothing after the 500th time. The couples I know who make it decades follow up with changed behavior. If he forgot her birthday last year, he has a calendar alert and a plan this year. If she said she'd stop interrupting, she physically pauses before speaking. Apologies without follow-up are just noise.

**5. They share a "mental load" checklist (no guessing)**

One couple I know has a shared notes app. Items like: "car registration due," "mom's birthday gift," "schedule pest control." Both people check it weekly. The fights that break marriages are rarely about big betrayals. They're about one person feeling like the unpaid project manager of the entire household.

**6. They pick their battles by asking "will this matter in 5 years?"**

The velvet sofa you hate? The way they hang the toilet paper? If it won't matter when you're picking retirement homes together, let it go. The couples who last have a high tolerance for small annoyances and a zero tolerance for disrespect.

**The truth:** Love that lasts isn't about grand gestures. It's about showing up for the small, boring, consistent choices every single day.

Save this for when you need a reminder. You and your person deserve the long game.

the mental load thing hit hard. my partner and i just started doing a weekly check-in after i literally broke down over planning dinner for the 800th time. it feels silly writing it down but wow does it help. also hard agree on separate hobbies - i need my alone time to miss him lol
