If you’re new in Akure or just looking for a fresh spiritual home, you don’t have to go far. I’ve lived here my whole life, so I know which churches actually feel like community and which ones just have big buildings. Here’s my personal breakdown of the best churches in Akure, street by street.
First, **Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Oke-Ado** is a classic. It’s right on Oke-Ado Road, near the big roundabout by the old Oja-Oba market. This place is huge - both in size and in history. The Sunday service is packed with families from Alagbaka and Ijoka, and the choir hits hard. If you want a powerful worship atmosphere with that old-school Pentecostal energy, this is your spot. The downside? Parking can be a nightmare during the 8am service, so come early.
For a more contemporary vibe, head to **The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Beauty Gate Parish** on Ilesha Road, just after the Federal Housing Estate. This is where the young professionals from FUTA area and the GRA crowd gather. The pastor preaches practical messages about business and marriage, and they have a solid youth group that meets every Saturday at 4pm. The building is modern, with AC in the main auditorium - a lifesaver during the harmattan heat.
If you’re into Methodist tradition, **St. Peter’s Anglican Church** on Oba Adeleke Street, off Oja-Oba, is the oldest stone church in town. The architecture alone is worth a visit - you’ll see the old colonial-era stained glass. But the real draw is the community. They do free medical outreach every quarter in the Oke-Aro neighborhood. It’s not as loud as the Pentecostal ones, but the sense of duty is real.
Don’t sleep on **The Winners Chapel** on Oyemekun Road, near the Oke-Osun junction. The teaching is very Bible-focused, and they have a strong prayer programme every Wednesday called “Faith Clinic.” The crowd is a mix of students from the nearby secondary schools and shop owners from the main market. The traffic around there on Sunday mornings is crazy, so park at the T-Junction and walk.
For a smaller, family-friendly experience, try **The Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) Power House** on Oshodi Street, off Ijoka Road. Don’t let the small building fool you - the deliverance service on Fridays is legendary. People come from as far as Ikare to attend. The prayer warriors are something else.
My pro tip: Visit at least two before you settle. Each has a different tempo. CAC Oke-Ado for energy, Winners for teaching, Anglican for tradition. And always carry a handkerchief if you go to MFM - you’ll need it for the prayers.
