Double cleansing? Good. Mixing acids like a mad scientist? Not so good. I learned this the hard way after a full week of angry red bumps and a stinging face just from splashing water in the morning. Turns out, my shiny new vitamin C and retinol were having a messy breakup on my skin. Let me save you the pain and frustration.

Here are the skincare ingredient combos you should NEVER mix:

1. Vitamin C and Retinol (or AHAs/BHAs)
Vitamin C is most effective at a low pH (around 3.5), while retinol works best at a higher pH (around 5.5-6). Use them at the same time and they basically cancel each other out. Plus, together they can cause major irritation, peeling, and that lovely sting. The fix? Use vitamin C in the AM, retinol in the PM. Give them at least 12 hours apart.

2. Retinoids and Benzoyl Peroxide (directly together)
This combo can oxidize the retinol, making it less effective, and also massively increase irritation. Benzoyl peroxide can also bleach your towels and clothes. The fix? Use benzoyl peroxide in the morning, retinol at night. Or use a gentle salicylic acid instead if you need a blemish spot treatment.

3. AHAs/BHAs and Strong Retinoids (on the same night)
This is the classic "acid + retinol" burn. Your skin barrier will throw a tantrum. Think redness, peeling, and breakouts from irritation. The fix? Alternate nights. Monday and Thursday for retinol. Tuesday and Saturday for AHA/BHA. Your skin will thank you.

4. Vitamin C and Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is a strong oxidizer. It will oxidize and break down your vitamin C before your skin can even absorb it. The result? Zero brightening, plus possible irritation. The fix? Use vitamin C in the AM, benzoyl peroxide as a PM spot treatment.

5. Water and Oil Based Products at The Wrong Time
This is less of a "no" and more of a "know the order." If you use a water based serum (like hyaluronic acid) after an oil based product, the oil blocks absorption. The general rule: water first, then water based products, then oil based products. Lightest texture to heaviest.

Pro Tip: When in doubt, stick to a simple routine. Cleanser, moisturizer, SPF in the morning. Cleanser, treatment (one at a time!), moisturizer at night. Your barrier will stay strong and your skin will glow.

Your face is not a chemistry lab. Keep it simple, keep it separate, and you'll see results without the drama.
