The Elixir for Love
Last night I went to see the medicine man
I walked a long, long, long path
Fought through the frights of thick mysterious bushes
And climbed his as high as heaven to get to his deserted valley
It is needless to say I braved through eerie and unimaginable sights
Just to get to his forgotten shack
“What do you want my boy?”
He asked emptying his bag of bones
But before I could reply
He looked up at me in contempt and called me a coward
I told I was not but in love
And not sure the one I loved, loved me back
Or would welcome my advances
He replied “that makes you both a fool and a coward”
“How does being in love make me a fool?” I asked
He simply said “men do stupid and foolish things for love”
Then he asked me to strip and lay on the cool floor
As he put an earthen pot on a fire he did not make
Took wet leaves from the pot and washed me from head to feet
And put the leaves back into the pot
Made incisions on my tongue
And asked me to spit the blood into the boiling pot that did not steam
The concussion sizzled so I knew it was poten
tHe went into the back room and made some incantations
And then came back out with a bottle wrapped in red cloth
He told me to drink it when I got back to the city
And speak first only to the woman I love
He collected a heavy fee and sent me on my way
I did just as he ordered
The content of the bottle tasted like water
But worked like magic
