📍Jos, Nigeria
You know what hits different this season? Not the fancy gadgets or designer bags but a plate of food that tastes like home. I saw that Bon Appétit article floating around about edible gifts and honestly, it’s something we in Jos have been doing right forever.
My neighbor just dropped off a container of kunun gyada and some fresh masa from the woman who sells by the Murtala Mohammed Way junction near Terminus market. Best gift I’ve gotten all month. That warmth of spice and the crunch of the masa transported me straight to my grandmother’s kitchen.
If you’re planning to gift food this season, here’s the local tea. Skip the supermarket packaged stuff. Go to the fresh pepper sellers near the Katako market on Wednesdays or early Saturday mornings. Get some genuine yaji from the Hausa spice sellers along Bauchi Road. Wrap it in a simple calabash or a clean Ankara cloth. That speaks louder than any branded hamper.
Also, the suya spots around Rayfield and the Bukuru express are doing a roaring trade right now. People are placing orders for family-sized portions to share over Christmas. The woman at the Tudun Wada Suya spot near the filling station does a mean kilishi that keeps for weeks. I’m grabbing some for my uncle in Abuja before the holiday rush spikes prices.
One warning though. The traffic around Angwan Rukuba and the old airport road has been madness. If you’re picking up perishable gifts like fresh fish or vegetables, plan leave early or risk the gridlock. And always confirm that the food is sealed well. Nobody wants their pepper soup leaking into their car upholstery.
This is the season where sharing a meal is sharing love. Jos knows how to do that better than any magazine article can teach.
