Finally got round to reading the full story about the Cornerstone Insurance Foundation medical outreach. They've been running this thing across 5 states and our traders in Uyo market actually gave it a thumbs up. I remember seeing the registration tent set up near the old Etiaba junction by Oron Road last month. At first people were skeptical thinking it was some kind of sales pitch for insurance policies but from what I hear it was genuine free checkups and basic meds.

My neighbour's sister who sells at Ikot Ekpene Road market went there for her BP and blood sugar check and said they even gave her reading glasses free of charge. That's the kind of thing that hits home when you see how many of our market women spend all day on their feet without ever having seen a doctor in years.

The outreach covered Uyo main market, Akpan Andem market and the Etaha market area from what the traders association confirmed. They did dental checks too which is rare for these free programmes. But let me warn you some of these corporate CSR things can be hit or miss. I've seen cases where they show up with only one doctor and long queues with no shade. But Cornerstone Foundation actually brought multiple medical teams and set up canopies.

I hope they continue this beyond the 5 states. Our people in rural areas like Itu and Ikono need this more than town folks but at least our market traders who are the backbone of the local economy got some attention. Some women complained the queue moved slowly but well what can you do when hundreds show up.

If you missed it keep an eye on the Cornerstone Foundation social pages. They usually announce the next phase in advance. Also the traders union at Akpan Andem market has the contact of the community liaison officer who coordinated here. She stopped by my shop and said they plan to do eye surgeries next year. Let's hold them to that.

Hmm I saw that tent too and honestly thought it was a marketing gimmick. Now I'm low-key regretting not stopping. My mum sells at Akpan Andem and keeps complaining about her eyesight but won't go to a hospital because she thinks they'll overcharge her. Wish they'd do this again soon I'd drag her there myself.
