Saw that Guardian piece floating around about 7 must-visit spots in Enugu. I mean, it's not bad for a national paper trying to hype us up, but as someone who actually lives here, I have some thoughts. The list is a bit too "tourist brochure" and misses the real heartbeat of the city.

For example, they mentioned the Nike Lake Resort. Okay, fine, it's a classic. Good for a relaxed weekend, especially if you want to escape the dust and see some monkeys. But it's expensive for what it is, and the service can be slow. Better option? Try the Enugu Sports Club early on a Saturday morning. The energy is raw - people playing lawn tennis, kids running around, and the food at the canteen is proper local fare. Way more authentic.

They also included the National Museum. Honestly, for most locals, that's a once-in-a-school-trip thing. It needs serious renovation. If you want real history, go to the Ogbete Main Market area and just walk around. The old colonial architecture on Market Road, the stories from the traders - that's the living museum. Plus, you can get the best ukwa (breadfruit) and fresh palm wine from a woman named Mama Chioma near the Abakpa end. Trust me on this.

Another spot they hyped was the Polo Park Mall. Yes, it's air-conditioned and has a cinema. But for a more genuinely Enugu experience, head to the New Haven axis, specifically Chime Avenue on a Friday evening. The suya spots there, right opposite the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, are unmatched. The meat is grilled right there, the pepper sauce is deadly, and you'll see everyone from young lawyers to retired professors just vibing. That's where you meet the real Enugu.

And they skipped the best part of our city - the hills! Nobody mentions driving out to the Nike Lake Resort area and then taking the small road up to the hilltop near the Golf Course. The view of the entire city at sunset is something else. Or the walk up the slope near the old Eastern Nigeria Secretariat building. Pure, unadulterated Enugu air.

So, the Guardian piece is a good starter. But for the deep cuts, you need to ask someone who navigates the potholes on Zik Avenue daily. This is the real local guide.

You nailed it with the suya spots on Chime Avenue. Last time I was there a guy literally grilled the meat over a drum while his kid did homework on a bench nearby. That's the vibe they'll never put in a travel guide. Also, the hill near the golf course? My uncle took me there once and I swear I saw the whole state. Shame they forgot it.
