📍Ilorin, Nigeria
The best thing to happen to Ilorin's food scene in recent years is definitely the rise of food trucks. Forget the old days of just bukas and roadside stalls, though I still love those. The trucks bring a different vibe, especially around the university area and event centers. Here are the spots I actually go to.
First, you have to check out **Grill 'n' Chill** parked most evenings opposite the main gate of **University of Ilorin**. Their suya-spiced chicken and peppered shrimp are legendary. They use this smoky coal grill that you can smell from the Unilorin Road junction. Get there before 7pm on Fridays or you will be waiting. The truck is bright red and always has music playing.
Second, stop at **Tasty Truck** near **Tanke junction**, right by the old **Tanke filling station**. They specialize in jollof rice bowls with grilled beef and plantain. The secret is the sauce, it is a bit spicy and very rich. I always add the extra scotch bonnet on request. They serve till late, sometimes 11pm, so it is perfect after a long day.
Third is **Bite Box** which sets up on **Murtala Mohammed Road**, close to **Oja Oba** market, but in the evenings when the market stalls are closing. Their amala and ewedu with assorted meat is a Ghana-must-go bag style but on a truck. The ewedu is smooth and not too watery, and the beef is fried crispy. It draws a big crowd.
Then there is **Naija Chop** located at **GRA** by the **Kwara State Stadium** roundabout. They serve made-to-order tacos and wraps with a local twist, like chicken suya tacos. The owners are young and they often host a small speaker that plays Afrobeats. It is the trendy spot for people in GRA.
Finally, look for **Mama N's Van** by **Sabo Market** on weekends. Mama N makes outstanding moi-moi wrapped in leaves, and her crunchy buns. The truck is small and white, easy to miss, but if you see a queue you have found it.
Pro tip: always carry cash. Some trucks now accept transfers but network in areas like Tanke can be slow. And bring your patience because good food takes time. These trucks are not just food, they are the new local hangout spots. Go with friends or just your appetite. The best thing to happen to Ilorin's food scene in recent years is definitely the rise of food trucks.
