📍Zaria, Nigeria

You know, I saw that headline about Vampire Penguin getting a new owner who wants to focus on high-quality ingredients. Honestly, that place has always been a bit of a mystery to me. It's over on Waff Road, near the intersection with Dan Agundi, right opposite that big filling station. But I've never actually been inside. It always seemed like one of those spots for the students from ABU who want something a bit different, maybe after a long day at the main campus.

My friend, who lives in Samaru, tried it a few months back. He said the ice cream was alright, but the toppings felt like they came from a bulk bag. So this news about a new owner wanting to upgrade the ingredients? That's smart. Zaria isn't exactly known for high-end dessert spots. We have Fan Milk everywhere, of course, and some places in Sabon Gari do decent suya and ice cream combos, but nothing that feels like a deliberate choice for quality.

The area around there, near the old Ahmadu Bello Way bridge, is getting busier with small eateries popping up. It's not a bad location. But for Vampire Penguin to work, they need to understand this market. Students will pay a little more if the quality is obvious and the price is fair. But if they just rebrand fancy and keep the prices too high, it'll only be for the few lecturers or business people passing through. I hope the new owner does some local taste tests. Get some feedback from the young crowd at the Samaru market area or near the ABU gate. If they can nail a simple, high-quality vanilla or chocolate base, and maybe some fresh fruit toppings like mango or pawpaw, they'd have something. Otherwise, it's just another shop that might not last the year.
