This is heartbreaking but not surprising to those of us living around the Bukuru axis. These farming communities between Gyel and Kuru have been sitting ducks for years. The attackers know the terrain better than the security patrols, and they strike during harvest season when families are most vulnerable. My uncle lost his farm last year near the same area, and he still travels with a vigilante escort just to check his crops.
The sad truth is that these are not random attacks. They are calculated. The bandits target farmers who refuse to pay "protection fees" or those whose land sits along cattle routes that have become contested. The problem is that the local government has been promising more police presence since the 2023 attacks, but the reality is that one patrol vehicle covers like five villages. Meanwhile, these communities are just expected to carry on.
What makes me angry is the silence. People in town go about their business in Terminus or shop at the new mall, and they forget that just 20 minutes away, families are burying their breadwinners. If you live in Jos, you cannot ignore this. These farmers feed our markets. The tomatoes you buy at the new site or the pepper at the old market come from these very fields.
If you know someone from those villages, check on them. Some of these families are now displaced and staying with relatives in areas like Rayfield or Tudun Wada. They need support, not just prayers. Also, if you travel through the Bukuru-Jos road at dawn or dusk, be careful. The attacks are happening closer to the main road now, not just deep in the bush. Keep your eyes open and don't stop for anything suspicious.
