📍Abuja, Nigeria

Just saw that DW article floating around about "five epic things to do in Abuja." Classic outsider list. They mentioned some spots, but let me give you the real local breakdown because some of those suggestions are tourist traps and others are legit.

First off, if they recommended Jabi Lake for a "romantic boat ride," fair warning - on weekends it's a zoo. Loud music, crowds, and overpriced snacks. Go on a weekday evening instead, around 4pm. The view hits different when you're not fighting for elbow room. Also, the boat operators around the Area 10 side are cheaper than the ones near the mall.

They probably hyped up the Arts and Crafts Village. Look, for souvenirs it's fine, but haggle hard. They see oyinbo or tourist energy and triple the price. Go to Utako Market if you want better deals on fabric and local art. Less polished but way more authentic.

Maitama - yeah, it's nice, but don't bother with the "exclusive restaurants" they listed. Instead, try the small buka near the UTC junction in Area 3. That woman makes the best egusi soup you'll eat in this city. No fancy decor but the taste is unmatched.

And if they mentioned Zuma Rock - skip the guided tour nonsense. Just pull over at the viewing point on the highway, snap your photo, and keep moving. The "village experience" they try to sell you is just a few guys selling plastic crafts made in China.

Best thing they got right? The nightlife in Garki and Wuse 2. But don't go to the big clubs until midnight. Everything here starts late. Hit up that small spot behind the old NNPC tower in Wuse Zone 4. No name on the door, just follow the music.

Abuja is honestly underrated for food. The suya at Banex Junction after 8pm changed my life. Bring your own napkins though.

Wait, the suya at Banex Junction after 8pm is actually legit. I went there last month with my cousin and we almost fought over the last stick lol. Also dead on about Jabi Lake on weekends - went once and immediately regretted my life choices. That Area 10 boat tip is gold though, I'll try that next time.
