📍Maiduguri, Nigeria
I woke up this morning to the news and my heart just sank. Another tragedy in our city. 23 lives lost. It's a heavy number that doesn't even begin to count the families shattered today. This blast happened near the Monday Market, that area around the post office and the Custom area. We all know that place is always packed, especially in the mornings.
I've lived in Maiduguri my whole life, near the Gwange neighborhood. I remember when the market was the busiest spot for miles. People from Gamboru, from the outskirts, everyone passed through there. After the worst of the insurgency, we all tried to rebuild, to walk those streets again. But stories like this bring back the fear. It makes you remember the checkpoints, the sound of helicopters, the way we used to flinch at a car backfiring.
For anyone coming into the city right now, or even locals thinking of going about their day, please be careful. The security situation is still fluid. Avoid the Monday Market area for now until the military and police give the all-clear. Stick to the less crowded routes if you can. The road by the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital is usually safer, and the new bypass around the old custom house is another option.
We are a resilient people, we have to be. But that doesn't mean we should be reckless. Check on your neighbors today. Share a meal if you can. That's what keeps us going. And if you see anything suspicious, don't just post it online, tell the security forces. We have to look out for each other.
