📍Benin City, Nigeria
If you've been feeling like you want to give back to Benin City but don't know where to start, I've got you. I've been poking around the past few weeks and found some real solid volunteer opportunities that actually need hands on the ground, not just social media likes.
First stop is the Uselu Market area, right along Uselu-Lagos Road. There's a community feeding program called "Project Serve Benin" that runs every Saturday morning from 7am. They set up near the big transformer by Uselu Market junction. You can help plate food, serve, or even just help with crowd control. No special skills needed, just show up with a willing heart. I went last week and we fed over 200 people.
If you're more into teaching or working with kids, head to the Ikpoba Hill area. There's a small library and after-school center called "Bright Future Hub" on Idogun Street, off Sapele Road. They're desperate for volunteers to help with basic English and math for primary school kids. They also need people who can read stories aloud or just play educational games. The coordinator, Mama Grace, runs it from her own compound. Just walk in and ask for her.
For those passionate about the environment, check out the "Clean City Initiative" that meets at the Ring Road roundabout every first and third Sunday of the month. They gather right under the big clock at Ring Road by 6am, then split into groups to clean around Oba Ovonramwen Square and the streets leading to King's Square. They provide gloves and bags. You'll get sweaty but it feels good. Plus you meet people from all over the city.
Another one I stumbled on is at the Central Hospital on Sapele Road. They have a volunteer program for hospital visitation and patient support. You don't need medical training. They need people to sit with patients, help read letters, or just offer company. You register at the administrative block, ask for Sister Beatrice in the Social Welfare office.
Lastly, if you're in Ekiosa or nearby, check out the "Street2School" initiative that meets at the Ekiosa Market junction. They identify out of school kids in the area and help get them enrolled. They need volunteers for data collection, counseling, and even just walking around talking to parents. I joined them last month and it opened my eyes.
Take a day, pick one that fits your vibe, and just show up. Benin City has so much heart. Let's keep it beating.
