📍Maiduguri, Nigeria

We are seeing some real changes in Maiduguri, and it is not just the government projects. The real development is coming from us, the people. I have been walking around a lot lately, and I want to share what I have noticed in our neighborhoods.

First, head over to the area around the Post Office on Bama Road. There is a new community-run skills training center that just opened its doors. It is not a fancy building, but they are teaching tailoring and basic phone repairs for free. Locals donated some old sewing machines, and the place is packed every morning. A neighbor of mine, Malam Umar, learned to fix his own generator there last week.

Another big change is in Gwange. You know that empty field behind the Gwange Primary School? The one that used to be a dumping ground? The youth group there, with help from some local shop owners on Dandal Road, turned it into a small football pitch. They even painted the goalposts. On weekends, you will see kids playing and a few women selling fried yam and suya from a small kiosk. It is a simple thing, but it keeps the kids busy and off the street.

The market at Monday Market is also evolving. Some of the traders, especially the women selling vegetables, started a cooperative. They pool money to buy supplies in bulk from the farms near Ngomari. This means cheaper tomatoes and peppers for everyone. And they share a delivery bike that they bought together. It is smart, local development that does not need a big sign outside.

I also heard that a group of retired teachers in the old city area, near the Shehu's Palace, are running evening classes for adults. They teach basic reading and math using old chalkboards in a mosque. Anyone over 18 can join for free. No forms, no fuss.

This is the kind of progress that matters. It is slow, it is small, but it is ours. Next time you pass by, stop and say hello to the people running these things. They are the ones building our future, one step at a time.
