HOME COMING
Chapter 2
Aunty please! please don't flog me I won't fail it again I said in tears hiding behind David my seatmate but the boy pushed me out to my predator who dragged me forcefully and asked me to face the chalkboard. My whole body trembled in fear and my little hands won't stop getting sweaty. I wish I could just go back to Nursery than this hell of basic Four.
Mrs Dorcas landed the cane on my butts and I couldn't stop myself from shouting "Jesus Christ mama ooo bia ooo" the whole class busted into a fresh round of laughter. There laughter brought tears into my eyes as I cried uncontrollably curing my class teacher under my breathe. I returned back to my seat and rest my head on my desk sobbing.
After the day school, I hurry carried my bag running home. I bumped into David at the stairs but I threw my eyes off.
Amarachi, he called
What, what? why are you calling me wicked boy.
I'm not wicked, you failed your spelling he said calmly
oh! really David. I only missed a word in each and you should have completed it for me since you were the one marking besides you failed four of your spelling but I helped you so why didn't you do same? I asked angrily
David stood without a word. He was silent. His silence got me pissed and I just have to pull him out of my way and go home.
Through the hours of the night I couldn't sleep, I still feel my teacher's cane. I wasn't the only one she flogged but I felt so bad, I still hear their laughter's.
Back in Acha my hometown you did be punished and sometimes forgotten. The field itself was enough punishment most especially for late comers. Sir Madino is seen everywhere, you will surely get caught and be led to the field to weed stubborn grasses with bare hands or cutlass. The breaking time is the most beautiful, since the school was situated close to the market place it was easy for Adanne, Ugo and myself to rush to the market to our Mama's shade. My mother knew I would show so she would have bought some local beans cake and sugarcane kept in wait for me. Acha community school doesn't look down on what you eat, one can eat whatever your parents can afford. In some cases I did tell my mother that I want Garri and whatever soup she made especially that Oha soup. My mother isn't a fan of fresh fish but Oha soup is better accompany with smoked fish, Snails, Mushrooms, Ogiri( local maggi) though it's smells but gives the soup a benefiting taste and of course Utazi and the Oha leaved are the last to go into the soup. The soup isn't complete with a smoothie swallow like fufu or wheat. They are irresistible.
City life has really remoulded me as I can't eat such in school. I remembered how the class laughed at Tunde for eating just Beans in class. Immediately after he opened his food, the environment changed. It was like it wasn't well prepared or maybe no enough oil and no crayfish. He was already having running nose. It was obvious the food was really peppery. The children held their nose and laughter filled in when Kingsley the class monitor asked " Are you eating white bean"? The boy ignored him and continue struggling with the food. I call this children bully. Bully in school can be both in the City or village. The victim must report to the school authority or parents if need be.
I have faced one in the village but I really taught Chibuzor a big lesson. He beat me up in class and just like that I reported him to my brother. That evening at the stream, I and my little brother hid inside the bushes waiting for him. He came to the stream few minutes later with his bicycle. He parked it and left to swim. I came out of my hideout and bursed his tyre and took off his keg throwing it deeply into the bushes. Chibuzor ran out of the water with anger. He raised his hand to hit me but received a kick from the back sending him to his knee.
My kid brother and I joined hands and beat him to stupor despite being older and taller than us. Some of our friends joined us in hitting him and made him to apologize to me, That was few years ago.
